ULE EWELT CERAMIC SCULPTURE

Ule Ewelt was born in Germany, she lives and creates in the countryside of Grünberg, Hesse. She studied geography and urban planning, then in 2003 turned her attention to ceramic. Since 2011 her art is purely figurative and focuses on the representation of animals.

Ewelt makes the relationship between human and animal species at the time of the origins of humanity the central theme of her artistic work. Animals have always had a highly symbolic character for men: they evoke images, memories, feelings and associations in intense ways, appearing in every mythology; at the same time they are tangible and material and have constituted both a source of food and a threat to human existence. The symbolic and corporeal dimensions of the animal merge in the sculpture, which qualifies as the means by which Ewelt aims to reunite these two aspects. A union that maintains, however, the voids, and that embraces the fragmentary character of the existence.

Ewelt began to investigate these issues while studying archaic representations of animals, in particular those of the cave paintings in Lascaux and in the Chauvet cave in southern France. Her admiration for the ability of prehistoric artists to capture the inner and dynamic nature of animals with few signs, prompted her to try establishing a connection with primitive forms of representation.

Ule Ewelt è nata in Germania, vive e crea nelle campagne di Grünberg, Hesse. Ha studiato geografia e urbanistica, poi nel 2003 ha rivolto la sua attenzione alla ceramica. Dal 2011 la sua arte è puramente figurativa e si concentra sulla rappresentazione degli animali.

Ewelt fa della relazione tra specie umana e animale al momento delle origini dell’umanità il tema centrale del suo lavoro artistico. Da sempre gli animali hanno per l’uomo un carattere altamente simbolico: suscitano immagini, ricordi, sentimenti e associazioni in modi intensi, figurando in ogni mitologia; allo stesso tempo sono tangibili e materici e hanno costituito sia una fonte di cibo sia una minaccia per l’esistenza umana. La dimensione simbolica e quella corporea dell’ animale si fondono nella scultura, che si qualifica come il mezzo attraverso cui Ewelt ambisce a ricongiungere questi due aspetti. Un’unione che mantiene, tuttavia, i vuoti, e che accoglie il carattere frammentario dell’esistenza.

Ewelt ha iniziato ad approfondire questi temi mentre si occupava di rappresentazioni arcaiche di animali, in particolare quelle delle pitture rupestri a Lascaux e nella grotta Chauvet nel sud della Francia. La sua ammirazione per l’abilità degli artisti preistorici nel catturare la natura interiore e dinamica degli animali con pochi segni, l’ha spinta a cercare di stabilire una connessione con forme primitive di rappresentazione.
