ANTHONY THEAKSTON SCULPTURE | SCULTURA
Anthony Theakston was born in 1965 in Lincolnshire, he graduated in ceramic design in Bristol and Cardiff and taught for five years at Camberwell College of Arts in London. In the meantime he opened his own artist studio in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in what was once the old piggery of the renovated farm where he lives, between the River Trent and the Laughton woods.
Anthony Theakston focuses his artistic work on the creation of bronze sculptures inspired mainly by the spirit and essence of birds. The choice of this particular animal lies in the desire to investigate a feeling that is also human: what it means to feel alive and free. Among Theakston’s favorite subjects are the Barn Owls: typical of open countryside areas, they hunt mainly on the edges of the forests and are widespread on all continents except Antarctica, but today they are in danger of extinction due to sudden climate change. At the same time stable as bronze and slight as the element to which they belong, these nocturnal birds are characterized by an elegant, absolutely silent flight, and by being monogamous: only when the partner dies, in fact, they can find another.
To restore the shape and movement of birds, the artist begins by making sketches on paper which are then perfected trying not to lose the initial expressive action that the quick sketches can capture, then transfers the drawing onto a slab of plaster. Once the shape has been carved and smoothed onto the plaster, the mold is ready for the foundry. The last phase is that of enamelling which takes place through a special spotted coloring technique developed by the artist.

Nel frattempo ha aperto il suo studio d’artista a Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, in quella che un tempo era l’antica porcilaia della fattoria ristrutturata dove vive, tra il fiume Trent e i boschi di Laughton.
Anthony Theakston concentra il suo lavoro artistico nella creazione di sculture in bronzo ispirate principalmente allo spirito e all’essenza degli uccelli. La scelta di questo particolare animale risiede nella volontà di indagare un sentimento che è anche umano: cosa significhi sentirsi vivi e liberi. Tra i soggetti preferiti di Theakston vi sono i Barbagianni: tipici di zone d’aperta campagna, essi cacciano prevalentemente ai margini dei boschi e sono diffusi in tutti i continenti tranne che in Antartide, ma oggi rischiano l’estinzione a causa dei repentini cambiamenti climatici. Allo stesso tempo stabili come il bronzo e lievi come l’elemento cui appartengono, questi uccelli notturni sono contraddistinti da un volo elegante, assolutamente silenzioso, e dall’essere monogami: solo quando il partner muore, infatti, possono trovarne un altro.
Per restituire la forma e il movimento degli uccelli, l’artista inizia facendo dei bozzetti su carta che poi vengono perfezionati cercando di non perdere l’azione espressiva iniziale che gli schizzi veloci possono catturare, successivamente trasferisce il disegno su una lastra di gesso. Una volta intagliata e levigata la forma sul gesso, lo stampo è pronto per la fonderia. L’ultima fase è quella della smaltatura che avviene attraverso una speciale tecnica di colorazione maculata sviluppata dall’artista.
