TOM HEGEN  AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Tom Hegen is a German photographer and designer based in Munich. His work focuses on aerial photography and explores the complex relationship between humans and nature. From above, he documents landscapes that have been profoundly transformed by human intervention, revealing structures, patterns and traces that often remain invisible from the ground.

By changing perspective, Hegen transforms familiar places into almost abstract compositions, inviting the viewer to reconsider the scale and consequences of human presence on Earth. Salt fields, mines, industrial sites, airports, agricultural landscapes and areas affected by climate change become visual evidence of the ways in which we occupy, exploit and reshape the planet. His research is closely connected to the idea of the Anthropocene, an era in which human activity has become one of the major forces influencing the Earth’s biological, geological and atmospheric processes.

Balancing aesthetic beauty with environmental awareness, Hegen’s photographs create a tension between attraction and reflection: what initially appears as an extraordinary composition gradually reveals the profound transformation of the landscape behind it. Through this elevated point of view, his work encourages us to step back, see the bigger picture and reconsider our relationship with the planet we inhabit.

His works have been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries and institutions across Europe and Asia, and his photography has received numerous international awards, including the Red Dot Design Award and International Photography Awards, as well as recognition from the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.

Tom Hegen è un fotografo e designer tedesco con base a Monaco di Baviera. Il suo lavoro si concentra sulla fotografia aerea ed esplora la complessa relazione tra l’uomo e la natura. Dall’alto documenta paesaggi profondamente trasformati dall’intervento umano, rivelando strutture, geometrie e tracce che spesso rimangono invisibili da terra.

Attraverso un cambiamento di prospettiva, Hegen trasforma luoghi familiari in composizioni quasi astratte, invitando l’osservatore a riconsiderare la portata e le conseguenze della presenza umana sulla Terra. Saline, miniere, siti industriali, aeroporti, paesaggi agricoli e territori segnati dai cambiamenti climatici diventano testimonianze visive dei modi in cui occupiamo, sfruttiamo e trasformiamo il pianeta. La sua ricerca è strettamente legata al concetto di Antropocene, un’epoca in cui l’attività umana è diventata una delle principali forze capaci di influenzare i processi biologici, geologici e atmosferici della Terra.

In equilibrio tra bellezza estetica e consapevolezza ambientale, le fotografie di Hegen creano una tensione tra attrazione e riflessione: ciò che inizialmente appare come una composizione di straordinaria bellezza rivela progressivamente la profonda trasformazione del paesaggio che ne è all’origine. Attraverso questo punto di vista privilegiato, il suo lavoro ci invita a prendere le distanze, osservare il quadro d’insieme e riconsiderare il nostro rapporto con il pianeta che abitiamo.

Le sue opere sono state esposte a livello internazionale in musei, gallerie e istituzioni in Europa e Asia, e la sua fotografia ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali, tra cui il Red Dot Design Award e gli International Photography Awards, oltre a un riconoscimento nell’ambito del Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
